Blog #8

1. A dog is a friend. A cat is an enemy. A girl is gold. Family is life. An accountant is a calculator. Money is power. Feelings are weakness. Pain is weakness leaving your body. Your body is a temple. Your body is you. She is a diamond.
2. The dog looked like a freshly made bag of cotton candy. The house smelled like a Bud Light brewery. Her hair looked like a barrel of hay. The car sounded like a dying cat. The cheetah was as fast as my internet.

  1. I really liked your metaphors "A girl is gold." and "Feelings are weakness."
Maybe I'm a bit prejudiced because I am a girl myself, but I really believe that. Maybe not so much a girl actually, maybe a woman. But I think a good men is raised believe such. Woman should always be respected and treasured just as your metaphor instates, gold. I also likes the feelings are weakness metaphor because for a long time I believed strongly in that. I still do believe in that because feelings make you vulnerable and put your life basically in the hands of someone else, and as someone who enjoys control, that's very scary. I also liked "Money is Power", although the hard truth of that is sad, it's true and I don't think there's anyone that could deny that. The law is often reconstructed for those with money. Those with money can often buy their way out of bad situations that most people cannot. Money unfortunately makes the world go round. It's a very powerful entity.

  2. I found your metaphor “Pain is weakness leaving your body” interesting because you didn’t just stop at “pain is weakness”. You went more in detail, giving the sentence more depth and meaning. The more detail the better. I also really liked “The dog looked like a freshly made bag of cotton candy.” These two things are so unrelated so when you put them together like that, it made me envision what it could possibly mean. I like how it got me thinking about what dog could look like this. This comparison is not cliche at all but it still works well for the reader’s imagination and will probably help a piece to be better. ‘Your body is your temple’ is a very common metaphor but I always enjoy reading it because it can basically mean whatever you want it to mean. Your body could be vulnerable and weak but you still have to treat it and take care of it to stay alive and well. I think that line is very real and relatable to any reader.

  3. I really liked the simile "The house smelt like a Bud Light brewery." I am actually quite fond of the smells that come from breweries having lived next to one for three years so as soon as I read that a flood of memories from that time came to my mind. I also like it because while I assume you are trying to say that the house smelled of beer you could also be saying that it smelled of yeast, like the mom was baking bread or something, because that's what a Bud Light brewery smells like, but not many people know or expect that.

  4. I liked the metaphor "An accountant is a calculator." I'm interested in business and finance so this stood out from the others. Accountants are like calculators in that they calculate profits, revenues, earnings, losses, and other important statistics using numbers. I also liked "Money is power." You're able to control and change things around you the more money you have. With money you can have almost anything you can think of, which is a form of power. You can also get away with doing things that most people couldn't.

  5. Your metaphor "money is power" was the most interesting to me. While money can't buy a position of power, it can always be used to sway opinions and "buy" a vote. Money also buys freedom with respect to how if you have a lot of money, you become capable of traveling to where you want and not having to worry about expenses. Power is defined as the ability to influence the behavior of others. Because of its benefits, money is the ultimate source of coercion.
