Some of my favorite metaphors/similes were:
Peanut butter is happiness. Peanut butter is home. His heart was like a black hole. The singing sounded like nails on a chalkboard.
I really like the simile "the singing sounded like nails on a chalkboard" because it is the perfect way to describe some people I have played and sang with. It might not be the perfect simile, especially when describing a deeper voice, but in Soprano and Alto ranges, this unfortunately sometimes rings true. "The sky looked like death" is also a fantastic, descriptive simile. Even though you have not mentioned a single characteristic about the sky, such as color and cloud coverage, I know exactly what you want the sky to look like, dark, ominous, and foreboding.
