Blog #7 - Oliver Hamlin

I write to "discover who I am". Whenever I write, whether it be in a formal or informal setting, I indirectly keep a log of my thoughts, decisions, and feelings that I am able to reflect on at any given time. During the writing process, I discover new interests as I educate myself on something, or simply give more thought to something I had never given much time to before. As I have grown older, I have seen my ability to write increase in time and writing has helped me discover my new potential in writing to different audiences. Writing or reading an essay can help someone take a step back and gain a new perspective on discovering one's self. Text leaves interpretation limitless to a reader, just as the ability to express one's ideas via text can develop new ideas and discoveries for an essay writer.
I thought the suggestion of giving more voice when writing an essay was very helpful. Giving a stronger voice in writing helps a reader understand a writer's stance on an essay better and can assist in persuading a reader to feel a certain way on a subject matter. This could be especially useful in a feature article because a feature article typically has a set stance on it, unless it is meant to be purely informational and free of bias. When it comes to writing for a tabloid or other controversial publication, using a strong, opinionated voice can be one of the most useful and efficient tools in the writing process.

  1. I really like your perspective in your blog. I also agree writing is great for reflecting on yourself. Growing up, I hated writing but like you, as I have gotten older I have seen my ability grow stronger and my appreciation for writing has also increased. I have also started reading recreationally a lot more. I believe getting a different writer's perspective can help your own writing ability.

  2. I too write personal essays to discover who I am. I like how you keep a log of past events. That makes recalling past events probably a lot easier than off the top of your head. Plus if you ever feel like you forget who you are you could always look at your logs and reminisce about the good times you had.

  3. I like the way approach the writing process. There are many ways to research and or discover knew things while writing. Keeping log is an excellent way to archive timeless thoughts that you may forget. These archives make it easy for you to pick and choose topics or moments you would like to elaborate on further.

  4. I think ‘discovering who you are’ in a piece is one of the key parts in good writing. I think every writing piece has potential to continuously get better and I agree wight the fact that we can learn from everything we read. Have you ever noticed that better writers are also more vigorous readers? Like I said in a previous comment, having voice makes or breaks the piece. I think being strong in what your trying to say gives the reader a better experience. Confidence in any writing piece can result in important ideas that either changes/helps the reader’s mind or reassures them of their own thought process. Even if a piece isn’t opinionated, I feel like writing is strong when the author is stronger. The reader puts trust in the author when reading a piece so when an author seems even more all-knowing about what ever the topic may be, the reader uses that sufficiently and subconsciously makes notes for their own future thoughts or writing.
